The critical rootzone CRZ is of great concern for tree health.  The more CRZ that is damaged (example: construction/grading) or neglected (example drought, compacted soil, inadequate nutrients, etc.), the more negative impact on tree health there is, whether seen or unseen.  Construction and grading in the CRZ may not show symptoms at first.  Depending on severity, it often takes years for a tree to fully manifest signs of decline when its CRZ is damaged or destroyed.  By the time tree decline is obvious to the average person, the situation usually is beyond remedy.  

It is generally accepted in the industry that the CRZ radius of a tree- in ideal soil conditions- can extend as far as 1.5 feet for every inch of tree diameter at breast height (dbh).  A simpler method to determine CRZ (although not always accurate) is the area encompassed by the canopy dripline (the spread of tree branches).  Certain aspects of the site (such as a driveway or body of water) may cause the CRZ to be less developed or not as far reaching in some cases.

The structural critical rootzone (SCRZ) is the radius that must be protected for a tree to remain structurally safe.  The Chattanooga Tree Commission has published a Best Management Practice (BMP) for preserving trees during construction.  In this BMP, they have provided a chart for referencing a tree’s SCRZ radius based on diameter:

Construction Impacts Within the Root Zone

Construction activity within the CRZ can have long lasting effects on tree health and stability. Even when damage is not immediately visible, the root system may already be compromised.

Common impacts include:

  • Soil compaction that reduces oxygen availability to roots
  • Root severing from excavation or trenching
  • Changes in drainage patterns that affect moisture levels
  • Increased stress leading to gradual canopy decline

In many cases, trees affected by construction stress do not decline right away. Symptoms often appear slowly over several years, making early diagnosis difficult without professional assessment.

Why Early Root Zone Protection Matters

Protecting both the CRZ and SCRZ before any site disturbance is one of the most effective ways to preserve tree health and safety. Once root damage occurs, recovery is often limited and depends heavily on severity.

Early protection helps:

  • Maintain long-term tree stability and structure
  • Reduce risk of delayed decline after construction
  • Prevent costly removals or liability issues later
  • Preserve mature trees that add value to a property

Establishing clear protection zones before work begins is critical, especially on sites with mature or high-value trees.
